Welcome to The Secret Word Poetry Cafe

Posted: November 17, 2012 in Uncategorized

Owned and operated by Nef Raven, The Secret Word Café is in the heart of Houston’s Historical Third ward!   Mama Nef, as she’s lovingly called, opened the Secret Word Cafe in 2007.  As a librarian at Texas Southern University, founder and coach of Texas Southern’s Slam Team,  and President and founder of Poetry & politics organization, she saw a great need for a home for the poets of Houston, Texas.  “I felt that the value of writers was being vastly overlooked and taken for granted,” she once said.   As a result, she gave up her job at TSU, stepped out on faith and The Secret Word Poetry Cafe opened its doors and held its first open mic night on September 11, 2007!    Since then, it has grown into a venue for artists of all mediums to collaborate, practice and enhance their crafts,  receive feedback, or just relax amongst colleagues!   From poetry shows, to acting workshops, small weddings and receptions and art exhibitions, The Secret Word cafe has been host to all.  Mama Nef hopes to keep her doors open for many years and become the hub of culture, art and self expression in the city of Houston.
